Troubleshooting with Essential Oils: Unpleasant Aromas

What happens if you read all about the benefits of essential oils, get excited, order a kit--and hate the smell of one as soon as you crack the seal? That's a lot of money to waste on something that makes you gag.

It's true! It is. And part of that is going to depend on what you want to use the oil for. If you're making perfume or deodorant, and you're looking for a specific sort of scent, you may want to run down to the health food store and sniff their cheapies just to get an idea of what you're looking at.

But it is also good to know that if an oil smells revolting, it is quite possible that there are toxins in your body which are basically acting like traitorous advisors, whispering lies to the king (your brain). When you catch the scent of an essential oil, those aromatic "volatile" molecules are hopping right out of the bottle into the air you're breathing, and therefore your body is immediately being affected by its properties. This makes toxins freak out, because they are being threatened, and they send false signals to your brain, tricking you into believing that the oils smell bad so you won't use them, and the toxins will be safe. Many times, when people keep using the oil they find disgusting (small amounts, building up) they find that the toxicity is overcome and the oil becomes much more pleasant to them.

I know. That's exactly what you wanted to hear. Me too. But it is worth keeping in mind that if my stomach turns at the slightest whiff of any particular essential oil...it might be exactly what I need.

    1. Angela, I had a little trouble with blogger not letting me comment, but it seems to be working now. :-) What I've been wanting to say is that I hear that a lot about Di-Gize. I wonder if it has to do with so much poor intestinal health in our culture?
